Spooky Specs: Halloween Styles

100812-lori

Halloween is around the corner, and trick-or-treaters will be donning their costumes for parties and door-to-door quests for candy. On this eve of total disguise and transformation, there may be some glasses-wearers who perhaps feel challenged in achieving total authenticity in their costumes, should the costume choice traditionally be a non-glasses wearer. Personally, in Pearle Vision’s range of stylish frames I’d happily compromise total accuracy in favor of dressing up as Frankenstein in Vogue Eyewear, or a Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz who just happens to be chic in Burberry frames. But, that’s not to say I don’t have the utmost respect (and awe) for the Halloween costume pro who masks themselves flawlessly down to the last detail in their assumed Hallow’s Eve identity. These enthusiasts in mind, and for all glasses and sunglass-wearing people out there in search of costumes that incorporate eyewear as accenting and mandatory accessorizing touches, I put together some costume ideas especially for you. We’ll take a look at the actual character and real folks’ costume interpretations.  Read on for some fun glasses-obligatory characters and the perfect pair of frames from Pearle Vision to complete the costumed look. Ben Franklin’s Bifocal Beginnings

Benjamin Franklin is still loved and admired 222 years after his death in the United States.  This one man contributed so much to the advancement of society in culture that it astounds most of us today.  In addition to discovering the power of electricity, Franklin is acknowledged as the inventor of the lightning rod, the Franklin stove, modern demographics, the catheter, and the glass harmonica, a musical device.  He also advanced the studies of weather, oceanography, evaporation, electricity, and several other important fields.  He even mastered chess and wrote it about the game so prolifically that he was inducted into the US Chess Hall of Fame in 1999.  Today, his face appears on the front of the $100 bill. If life imitates art, then it is no surprise that we copy our movie stars every chance we get.  From the 1930s through today, what the stars wear on the silver screen has an enormous impact on the fashion choices we make.  And this includes eyeglasses.  In fact, it ESPECIALLY includes eyeglasses.  Decade-long eyewear trends have emerged repeatedly from icons like Audrey Hepburn or Will Smith sporting a particular pair of spectacles.  Let’s look at some of the more influential styles throughout the years – sit back and grab your popcorn! Try On Tool Dress Up: Totally Tortoise

Try On Tool Dress Up: Totally Tortoise

One of the biggest frame trends du jour is a comeback of a classic finish known as tortoise. Its roots are in retro frame styles from the 40s and 50s when horn rimmed glasses were constructed from horn or actual tortoise shell. However, for most of their history they have been made from thick plastics that imitate the tortoise shell material—a speckled print in contrasting brown hues. Tortoise is often associated with a scholarly, vintage look, and the pronounced rimming to some may have the connotation of being outdated—an assumption I assure you that would quickly be proven wrong after trying on the new, sleek, luxe take of updated modern interpretations made in the finish. With Pearle Vision’s Try-On Tool, you can quickly try on our wide range of tortoise styles right from the comfort of your computer. To get you inspired, today I engaged in a bit of pattern recognition myself as I experimented with a few of my favorite tortoise frames. CONTINUE READING Continue reading
